A New Dimension of Science Learning.

Have you ever wondered how to effectively filter and utilize knowledge in this era of information explosion? Are you curious about how scientists transform curiosity, imagination, and inquiry into observation, questioning, exploration, and verification? Today, knowing how to find answers is far more important than simply knowing the answers!

Imagine a place where:

Every pause sparks deep reflection;
Every curiosity ignites new connections;
Every moment of inspiration fuels creativity.

If you are willing, this could be your gateway to the depths of science...

Thinking like Scientists, Imagine like Artists

In an era of information overload, scientific exploration is not only about acquiring knowledge but also about cultivating ways of thinking. Hefei Modern Science Museum is dedicated to creating a space where visitors are encouraged to think, explore, and create. Science here is not merely a rigorous field of study but a realm filled with inspiration and imagination. With interactive experiences at its core, the exhibition invites every visitor to observe the world through the mind of a scientist and to imagine the future with the vision of an artist.

Embark on a journey of Experiencing Science

The project is built around the principle that "space is narrative." By crafting immersive spatial experiences, it transforms science from an abstract concept into a tangible and perceptible reality. The exhibition is structured around 6 themed galleries: Science Archives, Math Class, Vintage Labs, Laboratory of the Future, Inspiration Gallery, and Temple of the Mind. Each space employs a unique architectural language, using multidimensional visual, tactile, and interactive experiences to narrate the evolution of science, allowing visitors to grasp its essence through immersive engagement.

00_Prologue

Creativity stems from thought, while curiosity ignites imagination. Science and art, moving in parallel, seek to deepen our understanding of the world and expand our perception of it. Truth rarely reveals itself at a glance, only by peeling away its layers can we gradually uncover its essence.

Scientists pursue discovery through observation, experimentation, and logic. Artists, in contrast, strip away reality’s surface with emotion and wit, revealing an imaginative interface where the real and the virtual, the physical and the digital, the logical and the paradoxical intertwine. The dance of particles, the emergence of form from nothingness, mirroring the dawn of chaos.

Confronting both the microscopic and the infinite, we stand before the unknown. For artists, each layer removed is a step into the uncharted. This endless process, where art and science converge, offers a fresh perspective and a multidimensional sensory experience.

01 Science Archives

The Journey of Science marks the official beginning of the exhibition. Throughout history, scientific exploration has been an integral part of human civilization. It not only satisfies curiosity but also continuously shapes and transforms human ways of thinking.

This exhibition hall offers a space imbued with historical depth. Structured along a timeline and centered around the research of scientists, it systematically presents the evolution of science, from its early origins in ancient times to the establishment of a comprehensive scientific framework by the late 19th century. By retracing the journey of science, we can trace knowledge back to its roots, understand the process of scientific discovery, and explore the origins of scientific thought.

02 Math Class

Mathematical thinking is an essential component of scientific research. Theorems, laws, and formulas in mathematics not only serve as crucial tools for understanding and utilizing nature but also represent a way of thinking. Harnessing mathematical thinking helps us better explore the unknown.

Designed as a 'Mathematics Classroom', this exhibition hall features elements such as blackboards and desks. By flexibly integrating embedded exhibits and display-oriented design, it enhances the exhibition’s coherence while offering a deeper interpretation of the essence of mathematical thinking.

03 Vintage Labs

At the end of the 19th century, the grand edifice of classical physics seemed complete, and physicists no longer held high expectations for further theoretical advancements. However, in April 1900, during a lecture at the Royal Society of London, Lord Kelvin keenly pointed out two unresolved issues in classical physics, concerning light and heat. referring to them as "two dark clouds." In just 30 years, these two clouds gave rise to relativity and quantum theory, which together laid the foundation of modern physics.

This exhibition hall takes visitors back to the laboratories of the 20th century, offering an immersive journey into the birth and development of relativity and quantum theory.

04 Laboratory of the Future

Behind the vibrant and diverse world lie fundamental principles and laws. Scientists explore these underlying rules through observation, experimentation, and theoretical deduction, using them to explain and predict phenomena, drive technological and social progress, and improve human life.

With a mysterious and high-tech atmosphere in general, we focus directly on phenomena themselves, highlighting some of the most representative and captivating occurrences in nature. Through a fresh scientific perspective, visitors will gain a deeper understanding of the richness of the material world and appreciate both its complexity and inherent order. Today, let us also take on the mindset of scientists to search for the clues nature has left behind and explore ways to solve problems amid this fascinating world.

06 Temple of the Mind

The object of scientific inquiry is the objective material world, while the subject of scientific endeavor is the emotionally rich human being. The humanistic spirit of science and the humanistic values of scientists are of great significance to the future of both science and humanity.

This exhibition hall uses a blue and white color scheme to create a calm and profound atmosphere, forming an intellectual space deeply connected to humanistic values. The exhibition examines three essential aspects: the spirit of science, the spirit of scientists, and the humanistic value of science. Through these lenses, it reveals the compassion and ethical foundations behind scientific work, encouraging the meaningful reflection and discussion among scientists and the broader public.

Temporary Exhibition & Public Area

The design of the temporary exhibition hall blends mirrored surfaces with dynamic lighting. Through moving images that depict brain activity, it symbolizes humanity’s ongoing quest to understand the essence of science.

In contrast, the public area embraces an open layout with warm wood tones, fostering a serene atmosphere that harmonizes technological innovation with human-centered design, offering visitors a space for contemplation and connection.

Conclusion

To create a truly immersive environment for scientific exploration, the design team integrates light, sound, and interactive installations to craft experiences that are both realistic and futuristic. Visitors do not merely observe science; they experience it firsthand. Dynamic projections and multimedia interfaces optimize the visitor journey, making exploration seamless and intuitive. Every meticulously designed spatial detail enhances the visitor’s journey of scientific discovery, infusing it with artistic sensibility, where rationality and imagination converge in harmony.
