On March 13, 2025, Hu Haijie, co-founder of VAVESTUDIO, was invited to attend the 140th session of the “DALU Forum”, hosted by the School of Visual Communication at China Academy of Art (CAA). He delivered a speech titled “Make People Feel”.

The famous modernist aesthetic dictum, 「Form Follows Function」has inspired countless variations, such as 「Form Follows Content」 ,「Form Follows Fiction」and 「Form Follows Strategy」. These transformations reflect designers’ ongoing inquiry into the fundamental question: “Why do we design?” In the era of AI algorithms, what is the ultimate pursuit of design? Emotion is often regarded as the last stronghold that distinguishes humans from machines—the romantic privilege of carbon-based life.「Form Follows Emotion」is to highlight both the fervor and the pathos of humanism.

In his lecture, Hu Haijie explored how “Engineered Emotion” has become central to design and shared the studio’s work in multi-dimensional spatial experience design. Through a series of both commercial and non-commercial cases, he illustrated how digital technology shapes spatial narratives and enhances user emotional engagement.

The “DALU Forum”, hosted by the School of Visual Communication at China Academy of Art (CAA), is dedicated to fostering interdisciplinary exchanges between design, technology, and culture. This session was moderated by Tan Bin, a digital artist and spatial narrative designer, and invited Zhang Chen, partner at InsPUMP Intuition Pump, as a special guest. Together, they explored museum storytelling practices driven by technology, as well as the innovative applications of emotion and spatial experience in design.
