Introducing the future of mobility
Zukunft Nahverkehr is a benchmark event format in the transportation industry. Launched in 2023, it immediately attracted thousands to a defunct train station in Berlin to discuss the latest innovations in regional mobility. With topics ranging from autonomous shuttles to accessible train design, the agenda was vast. How to give people an intuitive overview what the event is all about?
DB Regio asked VAVE to design a prologue to the actual fair event. In response, we developed an inspiring journey along the milestones of a journey in the regional public transport of tomorrow.
Going further together
Based off an initial design proposal, we entered a close collaboration with the team at DB Regio. The various team members’ backgrounds opened up new perspectives and insights into the workings and internal developments of a complex organisation. Through numerous brain stormings, content meetings, and focus sessions we distilled the exhibition’s messaging strategy, defined core exhibits, and developed the whole spatial identity. We oversaw the production process and adapted the design to challenging venue requirements and a tight setup timeline.
The immersive train of thought
The future of local transport is multimodal, digitalized, human-centric. To let visitors experience the variety of themes, topics, and issues discussed at the event, we designed a train in transition. Each carriage embodies a different mode of transportation, each exit opens up a new themed environment. From autonomous shuttles in rural areas to mobility hubs in urban areas: This train connects concepts and ideas rather than merely places.
“As visitors transition through our train of thought, the environment transitions around them. Continuously shapeshifting, the message becomes clear: The future of mobility is multimodal, digitized, and human-centric.”
Dustin Stupp, Creative Director
Seamless Transitions
Each of the four compartments represents a specific vehicle type or location, starting with the on-demand shuttle compartment, then leading to the regional train/subway compartment, continuing to the hybrid compartment (with underground, tram and bus) and finally ending in the station concourse. In these compartments, digital travel scenarios are presented in which the personalities Rita and Akay play the main roles.
Pathways to Tomorrow
The visitor gets to know their personal multimodal journey and the different offers they use on the way. In addition, the compartments convey to the visitor the outstanding qualities of public transport in the form of oversized statements: it is flexible, reliable, simple, safe, comfortable, fast and sustainable.
The compartments serve not only as an introduction to new sections of the journey, but also as a linear guide for the visitor tour.
The Architecture of Movement
Floor-to-ceiling partition walls hovering above the train form a tunnel and create various stagings in the spaces created in between.
From Doorstep to Destination
The visitor’s journey begins in the living room or at the front door in the rural space. Here, the visitor can book an on-demand shuttle via interactive stations to begin the journey in the first shuttle compartment of the train leading to the rural mobility hub.
Light Guides Your Way
After a ride in the train compartment, the visitor finds himself in a multimedia mirror cube. Here, the numerous possibilities of current passenger information are presented through a light simulation and a reflection into infinity.
Where Progress Takes New Routes
The journey continues in the hybrid compartment, which mirrors the interior of a tram/subway and is transferred to the replacement transport. The two-part section of the replacement transport consists of a white ‘construction site’ to draw attention to future construction projects and the importance of replacement transport.
The Innovation Gallery
The second part is a purple EV-branded gallery that stands out. Augmented reality stations provide information about the five building blocks of replacement transport through the use of a tablet and augmentation of animations onto the gallery images.
Where Every Journey Meets
The ‘station concourse’ serves as a passageway to the urban mobility hub, with media on both sides. Here the visitor meets Rita and Akay for the last time as they also arrive at the hub.
The Future at Your Fingertips
As they pass through, visitors are greeted by large displays that strikingly advertise the ‘app’ with all its integrated digital functions. Here, the visitor can get to know the most important functions of the app through a click-dummy application.
Discover, Connect, Belong
The mobility hub opens up as a central hub for communication and for lingering. Here, visitors can see at a glance what the MobilityHub of the future has to offer. A stele in the centre with an animated hidden object picture explains the functions of the offers.
Measuring What Matters
The epilogue tunnel provides an introduction with 2.5D statistics on social relevance in relation to topics such as living space, quality of life, prosperity, participation and climate and serves as a passage to the marketplace and the ZNV event.
