Emergence

“Emergence” explores the cycle of life. The visual performance puts the audience in a universe of "entropy", to experience the space with unusual perception.

Mission

Virtual Vision and Poetic Programming

"Emergence" is a collaborative project between the German space experience design team VAVE Studio and Chinese digital art collective InsPUMP. Through virtual visualization and poetic programming, the project abstracts and intensifies the natural phenomenon of peach blossoms blooming in early spring within an artificial space. It interprets the concept of "entropy reduction" and represents life's defiance against the arrow of time.

Idea

Time and Space Selection for "Emergence"

The project intersects two distinct elements: a moment in time—the beginning of spring—and a specific space—Suzhou architecture. At this intersection, we created a new multi-dimensional environment. Peach blossoms serve as our symbol of spring's awakening, while we simultaneously deconstructed and reimagined the classical Suzhou garden concept, creating an abstract corridor with optical illusions displayed on surrounding screens. The physical installation features a traditional Suzhou roof composed of thousands of tiles, with a circular stage embedded at its center. Throughout this multi-dimensional space, countless peach petals appear scattered across the roof, stage periphery, and behind windows. By imbuing our programming with poetic sensibility and employing multiple blowers, we achieved—after hundreds of iterations—a perfect synchronization between virtual and physical petals. These petals flow and dance to musical rhythms, cycling between states of order and chaos, growth and decay, increasing and decreasing entropy.

Solution

Immersive Visual Performance

The installation expresses life's resistance to natural forces through the rhythmic forward and reverse movements of peach blossoms, creating a visual metaphor for the perpetual cycle of entropy. The synchronization of virtual and physical dynamics through programming represents its own form of "entropy reduction." This immersive performance places viewers within an "entropy universe," engaging all their senses in experiencing life's miraculous nature.
